Why Do AI Culling Tools Over-Select Wedding Photos?
Most of them are tuned to reward technical cleanliness: sharp focus, open eyes, good exposure. That's a different target than the moment itself. One wedding photographer's published December 2024 review documented a widely used AI culling tool keeping 1,500 shots out of 4,800 on a real wedding. The photographer's own hand-picked selection was 580 images — the tool kept nearly three times as many. The same review reported the tool rejecting the actual first kiss in favor of several nearly identical frames taken a second before it.
The pattern behind the number
The review's own explanation is blunt: "The core issue is that the AI lacks context. It simply doesn't understand: why an image might be meaningful [...] the emotional weight of certain moments." A technically sharp face and a face mid-blink both register as data points to a model trained on image quality. Only one of them is the photo a couple will actually want.
A separate, independent review published in February 2026 described the same failure from a different angle. It documented a culling tool giving five-star ratings to images that were "clearly out of focus." The reviewer's conclusion: "if I can't trust it, I have to double-check everything." Once every image needs re-checking, the tool has added a second job on top of the one it was meant to remove.
What over-selection actually costs you
Extra photos sitting in a folder are the smaller problem. The real failure is keeping eight near-identical, slightly sharper frames in place of the one that carried the moment. Pull five random burst sequences from a completed cull. Compare the picked frame against what you'd choose cold, without seeing the rating first.
